Thomsenbíllinn

Fyrst car came to Iceland 20. june 1904. It was the Thomsen-car. To get the car here the parliament gave Ditlev Thomsen merchant 2000 ISK grant to buy the car. He went to Copenhagen and bought a used car. The car was moved to Iceland with the steam-ship Kong Trygve. The car was the make Cudell, most probable year 1901. It was a 4 seat passenger vehicle that you could pull a top over. The year 1908 the car was sent back to Denmark after standing untroubled for 3 years. Ditlev hired Þorkell Clementz who went to a 8 day course in Denmark before the arrival of the Thomsen-car. Whereas today you have to go atleast 10 hours with a driving teacher, having a pracitce license for 1 year, go through driving classes and the total cost of 200-250 thousand ISK. Þorkell Clementz was the fyrst driver in Iceland.
